Top Athletes Who Swear By CBD

In a statement released on September 29th, 2017, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) announced that it had changed its stance on the formerly banned Cannabidiol. A further clarification stated “cannabidiol extracted from cannabis plants may also contain varying concentrations of THC, which remains a prohibited substance.” (WADA 2018 Prohibited List)

Since the controversial press release when UFC Champion Nate Diaz was seen using a CBD vaporizer pen on camera, the world of sports medicine has opened its eyes to the benefits of cannabidiol.

“It helps with the healing process and inflammation, stuff like that. So you want to get these for before and after the fights, training. It’ll make your life a better place.” -Nate Diaz

Let’s take a look at some of the top professional athletes that use CBD for enhanced recovery and pain relief:

1. Former NFL Linebacker Reggie Williams

After years of abuse to his right knee while playing in the NFL, Reggie Williams had tried every pain management option available. His knee pain was apparently so severe that he needed crutches to walk. This was all until he discovered the benefits of CBD for pain relief. Williams began using a CBD-infused patch, which gave him 96 hours of pain relief. He has since become a firm supporter of CBD, and has made several public appearances about his pain relief story.

2. UFC Fighter Gina Mazany

Professional UFC Bantamweight Champion Gina Mazany says that she has been using CBD before fights and after fights. She uses CBD before fights to help ease her nerves, and after fights to speed recovery after subjecting her body to such a brutal sport.

When asked about why WADA removed the ban on CBD, she responded, “I think it got lifted because the beneficial information about CBD began to surface especially in the MMA world. Because of what we put our bodies through, it’s not normal and it’s ideally not healthy. So why can’t we have this extra something to help us recover and stay healthy and keep the brain damage in line. I am not surprised, I am actually surprised it hasn’t been sooner.”

3. Endurance Runner Flavie Dokken

Colorado endurance runner Flavie Dokken has accepted a sponsorship from Boulder-based cannabis company Wana Brands. After her time in the US Army, Dokken began competing in ultramarathons in Colorado and has completed several 100k+ races. To keep up with the rigors of ultramarathon training, Dokken began using CBD edibles and capsules to supplement her recovery and help with chronic pain. Dokken was quoted saying that there are still cultural barriers to cannabis use in professional athletes. She is currently leading the charge to break down these barriers and promote the benefits of CBD for athletic performance.

With the amount of athletes coming forward about the benefits of CBD, it is not unfathomable to think that CBD may become commonplace in households, along side with aspirin and ibuprofen. With the FDA’s tight regulations on CBD research, its therapeutic benefits have yet to be proven in a clinical setting. With the growing popularity of CBD and greater cultural acceptance of cannabis products, one thing is certain; the CBD industry is here to stay and its full potential has yet to be unlocked.
